GRÜNDUNG UND INITIATIVPROJEKT:
FREI-RAUM.BERLIN, PROJEKTRAUM COTHENIUSSTRASSE, BERLIN (2022–2025)
Von August 2022 bis März 2025 bestand mit frei-raum.berlin, Projektraum Cotheniusstraße in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg ein unabhängiger Ort für audiovisuelle Kunst, initiiert und kuratiert von Anne-Louise Frei. In diesem Zeitraum fanden über 20 Ausstellungen, Konzerte und Performances statt, an denen mehr als 60 Künstler:innen aus Berlin und internationalen Kontexten beteiligt waren. Der Projektraum wirkte als strukturbildende Plattform innerhalb der freien Szene. Neben der Präsentation von Werken lag der Schwerpunkt auf der gemeinsamen Weiterentwicklung künstlerischer Ansätze. Künstler:innen erhielten Unterstützung in Kommunikation, Strategie, Vermittlung und künstlerischer Beratung. Zahlreiche Arbeiten wurden im Austausch geschärft und in enger Zusammenarbeit weiterentwickelt, wodurch neue kollektive Arbeitsformen sichtbar wurden.
Die besondere Atmosphäre – ein Raum, der barfuß betreten wurde und damit die Intimität eines zeitgenössischen Kunstsalons trug – förderte konzentrierte Wahrnehmung und Nähe zwischen Künstler:innen, Publikum und Stadtgesellschaft. Ergänzend zu den Ausstellungen entstanden Publikationen und Editionen, die Prozesse dokumentierten und verstetigten.
Von Beginn an war der Projektraum als Ausgangspunkt verstanden, um Kultur zu schaffen und unabhängige Formen der Zusammenarbeit dauerhaft zu fördern. Auch wenn der feste Standort 2025 endete, lebt frei-raum.berlin als Projekt weiter – getragen von Frei’s Handschrift und dem Anspruch, audiovisuelle Kunst sichtbar zu machen, Netzwerke zu stärken und langfristige Strukturen für die freie Szene zu entwickeln. During this period, more than 20 exhibitions, concerts, and performances took place, involving over 60 artists from Berlin and international contexts.
The project space functioned as a structure-building platform within the independent scene. Beyond presenting works, the focus lay on the joint development of artistic approaches. Artists received support in communication, strategy, mediation, and artistic consulting. Numerous works were refined through dialogue and further developed in close collaboration, making new collective working forms visible.
Its special atmosphere – a space entered barefoot, carrying the intimacy of a contemporary art salon – fostered concentrated perception and proximity between artists, audiences, and the urban community. In addition to exhibitions, publications and editions were produced, documenting and consolidating processes.
From the outset, the project space was conceived as a starting point to generate culture and to sustainably promote independent forms of collaboration. Although the fixed location came to an end in 2025, frei-raum.berlin continues as a project – shaped by Frei’s signature and guided by the ambition to make audiovisual art visible, to strengthen networks, and to develop long-term structures for the independent scene
